I agree that Ubuntu seems a little sluggish under VirtualBox. The only other machine I have it running on is an older laptop and it seems sluggish there as well. I am not sure what the problem is. My best guess is GNOME (on which Unity runs) because it really wants 3D hardware acceleration. Install the Guest Additions to VirtualBox and then check the 3D acceleration box on the settings page of your virtual machine.
Hmmm … if it says Remove, I have to assume Ubuntu Software Center thinks Lubuntu Desktop is installed.
Surprising that it does not show up in the desktop selection list. Perhaps the install didn’t occur properly.
I would try uninstalling Lubuntu Desktop and then reinstalling it. I provide instructions for completely uninstalling Lubuntu Desktop form Ubuntu 11.10 over here.
The instructions should be the same for Ubuntu 12.04 (I just haven’t gotten around to writing the 12.04 article yet).

I install ubuntu 12.04 on my virtualbox but it s very laggy also the desktop environment doesn’t say install instead it says remove but when i log off and try to choose the new desktop i do not have that option ?
